Word of the Day
I was thinking that we should have something daily to look forward to. A daily book review would be to lengthy. Maybe a daily book quote? Hmm.. I'll actually probably do that next! But now, I think I'll do a Word of the Day. Our first word is...
marina (noun) small harbor with docks
I thought this would be a fine word for a fine summer day. To get these words, I open up to a random page in Webster's New Pocket Dictionary by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company. All credit to this mentioned dictionary. Every word that will every be in this Word of the Day is from this dictionary and every time, all credit goes to this dictionary. Anyways, have a fine day and keep reading! -Lucy

Storybird's Summer Writing Club
Mrs. Leighton introduced Storybird to us this school year that has just ended. Since then, I have created a personal, non-school use account and go on it quite often. Today, I found something amazing on Storybird... A Summer Writing Club!
Here are some very detailed instructions to find the Summer Writing Club...
1. Go to www.storybird.com
2. Log in or create an account if you don't have one already.
3. Once you have logged in, click the button in the top left corner that says "Read"
4. There should be another set of buttons just below the set where the "Read" button was. In this new set, there is a button that says "Blog". Click on that button.
5. Scroll down until you find the post that says "Welcome to the Summer Writing Club". Click on and read that post.
6. Once you are finished reading that post, click on the link that says "Click here to get started on the first prompt". The link should be at the very end of the "Welcome to the Summer Writing Club" post.
7. Read the post that came up from clicking "Click here to get started on the first prompt".
8. Follow all of their instructions and get writing! Feel free to comment on this post what you wrote, or mention me in a comment on Storybird so I can read your story and follow you too. My account is readingkitten123

Summer Reading Goals
Hello everyone! Sorry that it has been FOREVER since the last post, but now that it's summer, everyone has a lot more time on their hands and hopefully I'll be able to post more often.
I thought that I'd start by asking if anyone had any Summer Reading Goals. I do! I want to read every book that I own that I have NOT read before. But, I also have three book lists and a list of books that I made that the Ellsworth Public Library has that I want to read. So many books, not enough time...
If you'd like, you can post in the comments any Summer Reading Goals that you may have. If not, that's okay!
I would also like to congratulate Reilly and Taylor for graduating! I hope you two keep checking out the blog because Katie, Mrs. Leighton, and myself will keep posting! If we have book club next year, I hope you stop by for a visit.
I think I might post one or two more posts today, and maybe some more over the next few days and definitely over the summer. Anyways, have a fantastic day and keep reading! -Lucy

Book Review: Pi in The Sky
Hello! This is Lucy and I'm so glad you are reading my second book review ever! Enjoy!
Have you ever looked through a telescope and seen all the beautiful stars at night? Maybe you have. Maybe you haven't. But I bet you have never wondered about what you didn't see through that telescope.
Joss is what seems like an ordinary boy. He goes to school, has some annoying brothers, and has the seemingly unimportant job of delivering pies. That's right; pies.
Well, Joss isn't ordinary. He is in fact the Seventh Son of the Supreme Overlord of the Universe. So, that means he has to put up with six annoying older brothers. And those pies I mentioned earlier? Those pies contain the essential ingredients to create other planets, stars, and galaxies. Everyone where he lives is immortal. And yet he still has to go to school.
Joss lives in The Realms. The Realms is in dark matter, which is a lot of the universe. People who live there only have to eat and sleep every once in a while. They have been there longer then we have, so their bodies are made of material that was here at the beginning of the universe, so they are softer than we are. They can rearrange their molecules to be anything, like having wheels instead of legs and feet. Sort of like the people, buildings can be anything they want to be. Everything is pretty amazing in The Realms. And there are so many more cool things I haven't even told you about!
Everything is pretty normal until this one particular day. Kal is Joss's best friend. Kal's parents work as OnWorlders, so Kal stays with Aunt Rae. Joss goes to Aunt Rae's house. Joss was going to pick up a pie Aunt Rae had made. But while he was there, the siren goes off. It means someone outside of The Realms is looking in their direction. Aunt Rae has terrible hearing, so she doesn't hear it and keeps doing what she's doing instead of ducking like she's supposed too. Someone sees her. Someone on Earth who was looking through a telescope. And there are humongous consequences.
Normally, they blow a planet up. But everyone is too fond of Earth with it's long list of life forms and with so many planets nearby they just couldn't do that. So they took the entire Solar System out of time. With Kal's parents on it. Soon after, Kal disappears, since his parents now really never existed. In his place stands a girl. From Earth.
Now everyone is confused and the girl, named Annika, is too. And on top of that Joss is given the job of bringing Earth and it's Solar System back exactly the way it was. He faces this crazy adventure with Annika at his side, even though it takes a while for Joss to warm up to her.
So, will they succeed in bring Kal and Annika's home back? Or will they fail after trying with all the effort they could?
My favorite part is when Annika first comes and Joss gets to know her. Joss finds out that she can be bossy and demanding, but she can also be caring and understanding if you dig deep enough. Their journey together is an unforgettable one.
This story shows that teamwork is the best work, you have to believe in yourself and who you are, and most of all, friendship will stand the test of time and across all galaxies.
Pi in The Sky is a 244 page book written by one of my favorite authors, Wendy Mass. I recommend this book to people who like Sci-Fi, but not scary Sci-Fi. It is also a great book if you like books that make you think. You will never forget this book.
Wendy Mass does a great job narrating as Joss, especially she doesn't know what it's like being a teenage boy! It had perfect amounts of everything, emotion, thoughts, dialogue, everything.
In conclusion I want to thank you for reading this book review and hope if you read this book, you enjoy it! Wendy Mass is a fantastic author so if you see a book by her, take a look at it! You might find it interesting and read it and think it's really good, like I did! If you want to learn more about her, visit her website, www.wendymass.com.
Thanks for reading! I don't know about you, but I think we should have a catchphrase for our book club and blog. It could be used in posts or we could use it as a secret greeting or other fun stuff! Thoughts? Comment below! -Lucy

Does It Have to be Over?
I wonder if we all might meet once a month for a book club? Any thoughts for a book we could read....new to all of us? Or an author club? We could choose to read a book by the same author?

One Last Meeting
Hi, this is Lucy. I wanted to know when our last meeting is going to be, and I hope others are wondering too.
So we can't do Monday, Mrs. Leighton won't be there. We could do Tuesday maybe. That might not work for me, but Katie can probably drive me home, so that could be doable, right? We also could do Wednesday from 4-5 instead of 3:15-4:15. That might be alright. Thursday might work and there's no after school on Friday. If none of those are possible, we could do Monday of next week maybe.
We should work this out on comments to find a good day and time for our last meeting. Is it really going to be our last one, or are we going to have another one when Taylor gets back from Florida? I think everyone should be at our last meeting, Mrs.Leighton, Reilly, Taylor, Katie, and me.
I can't believe book club is going to be over soon. It's kind of sad. We've come so far and it was a lot of fun. We are all friends now, or, at least I think, better friends than we were before. We should definitely keep blogging though. I know I will. I might even start my own book blog, start another book club when this one is over, or both!
For our last meeting, we should definitely have a little(or big!) book party. My dad offered to bring a little cake, he is an avid reader himself. We could all get a book to bring for like a "Secret Santa" sort of thing, or a book swap. It hopefully won't matter, new or used. We would have lots of fun, and we could just eat cake, do the book swap and talk about books, the club, and what we are going to do after, or just talk. That would be a great end to the most awesome book club ever!
Post comments below to discuss these ideas!(If you want) Thanks! Books are awesome!

One of My Favorite Books!
Hello! This is Lucy and here is my first ever book review! I hope you enjoy it!
"Sophie had waited all her life to be kidnapped."
That is the first sentence of one of my many favorite books of all time. This 488 page book is titled "The School for Good and Evil" by Soman Chainani. "The School for Good and Evil" is about two teenage girls from a fictional town called Gavaldon. They are unlikely friends. Sophie has long golden hair, shining blue eyes, an amazing complexion with rosy cheeks, the pinkest lips, and beautiful dresses. She is pretty much perfect, with a kind personality. Agatha has short black hair, lifeless eyes, pale complexion, and always wears jet black. She owns an ugly, violent cat named Reaper, lives in a graveyard, and scares everyone away, children and adults alike. Or so it seems. Every four years, two children are taken from Gavaldon, one good and one evil. The night for the kidnapping is coming soon, and Sophie is bursting with excitement. She thinks she is going to the school for good. Agatha doesn't believe all this hogwash and pretty much ignores it and thinks Sophie is crazy. But when in the night, Sophie and Agatha are kidnapped, Agatha is starting to believe this whole "fairy tale" thing. Sophie is so excited to be going to the school for good, but what happens when Agatha is chosen to attend there instead, and Sophie is dumped in the school for evil? Is it a mix up, or the horrifying truth? Will the schools change the girls, or tear their friendship apart? The girls experience everything from school rivalry, to failing classes, to boy drama, and finding out more than they intended about the school's secrets.
I don't mean to tell you too much, so I'll tell you this much about my favorite part. I love when they are in their classes, and when at first they got their schedules. You can really "see" the classrooms, teachers and students with the amazing descriptive language. There are student rivalries, and the girls find out that something beyond belief will happen if you fail to many classes...
"The School for Good and Evil" is one of the best fantasy books I've read, so if you like fantasy (like me!), I can't imagine why you wouldn't love this book. It has a fantastic plot, rich details, and I could not put it down! There are cliff hangers on every page! I recommend this book for all of those reasons. Even if you don't normally enjoy fantasy as much, I think you should at least try it out. And if any adults are reading this, do not be afraid to read this book, or any books that are not necessarily your level. My dad, who is 54, reads books I recommend. He read this one and thought it was pretty good. My teacher, Mrs. Leighton, reads young adult books a lot. So, in conclusion, I just wanted anyone who is interested in this book know that this book is the first in a to be trilogy. The second one is out and called "The School for Good and Evil: A World Without Princes". The author, Soman Chainani, is working on the third book and (drum roll, please!) a script for Universal Studios who bought the rights to make "The School for Good and Evil" into a live action film! You can find out more at www.schoolforgoodandevil.com. They have information, quizzes, and more awesome stuff!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my first book review. I want to thank my teacher, Mrs. Leighton, for starting this book club and blog, my parents and cats and dog for being awesome, and Soman Chainani, for writing this truly amazing book.
Finally, this is a little poem that is in the book, and I think it's pretty awesome.
"In the forest primeval
a school for good and evil
Two towers like twin heads
one for the pure
one for the wicked
Try to escape you'll always fail
the only way out is
through a fairy tale"

Our Group Goal This Week!
Our book group talked a few weeks ago about sharing quotes from favorite books we've read by creating posters to display on our school's walls. Let's do that this week! A possible plan might be this:
- First, decide on your quote. This may originate with you, a favorite book, or from a website such as Pinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/missoulalibrary/quotes-about-reading/
- Next, choose your size poster. Pages has several templates to use. Or create your own. You may print Google images if you like but use these to compliment your own original artwork.
- You might want to consider a selfie and then using a neat art tool to jazz it up. Pic Monkey is neat: http://www.picmonkey.com
- Of course, you will choose where in our school to display your poster.
- Any thoughts? Let's use Comments to chat.
- More Poster Ideas: posters about reading

Today our group By the Book checked a blog called Yournextread.com. Mrs. Leighton gave a demo and asked Katie and Taylor to try out the site to find a good read they might like (Reilly was running the cross country course but arrived later!)! So here are the results:
Katie searched for The Emerald Atlas, a book she’s currently reading. The results The Fire Chronicle and another book called Smile. She really likes the series and first one so The Fire Chronicle is the 2nd one. She believes there are three in the series. She said she’s never really tried reading Fantasy but the second she started reading this, she realized it clicked. “It’s the best book I’ve ever read.” The Black Reckoning is the last one. If you like magic in your stories, this is the book for you!!
Taylor looked up the results typing in Lord of the Rings and found one written by J R R Tolkein called The Silmarillion. She said it looked “amazing” and really really good and she wants to read it. The Amazon reviewer said “fierce fairy tales and fiercer wars that ring with heraldic fury” which Taylor said made her think she likes books that include fighting but also dramatic and romantic things.
Reilly searched Yournextread with the book The Alchemist: The Secret Life of Nicholas Flammel. He found The Magician and the other books in its series. He searched The Magician and found another book called The Red Pyramid. He read part of the Amazon review and commented that he is inspired to read it.”Since their mothers’ death...” that quote caught Reilly’s eye. It sounded mystifying, he said.
You Can't Drop This Book!
Taylor brought in the five books in Amulet series. The author is Kazu Kibuishi , a Japanese writer of graphic novels. This is in the genre of fantasy and is a series. The two main characters are kids, teens. The world is realistic somewhat but some characters are not. There are toys that come to life, two elves who are part of the story, and there is an amulet in the storyline. It’s like guide and a force that controls the main character, Emily, to do things against her will. Taylor says if you truly like eye catching details, amazing visuals, you will not be able to drop this book.”
